Hi guys! Thanks for stopping by!😎
Being Saturday, I got to sleep in just a bit which was nice. I’ve been really tired as of late, so I was happy for the extra time. After fixing the PowerPoint for service for tomorrow and making the needed chord chart copies, we meet up with Jan to head out for our hike.
It was forecasted to be raining today but we were met with mostly sunny skies and it was AWESOME! A bit on the cool side but once you got moving, you warmed up quite nicely.
The birds have returned and they are out in force doing birdie things. We even saw a young squirrel
busy eating newly blooming tree buds ( the dingly -dangly sort). He seemed very happy.
There is a dip in the paved road just before the last hill where the trailhead begins that is boggy on both sides. That is where the skunk cabbage grows.
If you follow my posts, I’ve mentioned it’s thermogenic properties and how it can actually grow up and out of 12 plus inches of snow! It pokes out its little pod shaped head and then begins to bloom. At first all you see is the yellow pod, but as it emerges, the pod opens up along its side
and you can see the stamen which is fairly large and sort of looks like an ear of corn. It’s a brilliant yellow against a backdrop of mostly dead debris from last year’s bog growth.
As it grows, green leaves will emerge as well often measuring upwards of 18” plus in height! Quite impressive!
It also gives off a skunk like odor, hence its name. I’ve always heard it’s edible but upon further research some parts are and some parts are deadly. So, IF you can get past the smell, they say ( don’t take my word for it-research it before you do anything) the root is edible but the green leaves are poisonous. I personally think I’ll just skip it altogether! There’s enough of it in this bog area that it makes just walking by it difficult to breathe! 😳
Tomorrow is an early day so I’m hoping for an early night tonight.
That’s gonna be it for now. Keep on @actifit steppin’! Remember any exercise is good for you so keep at it. Have a wonderful night wherever you are!💪👍😎😍
