Have you ever heard of mastic (aka mastiha or "tears of Chios") before? The Greeks surely know what I'm talking about...
Mastic is a unique natural resin of the Chios mastic trees. It is the brand product of Chios and its production and trade is very important for the local economy.
"Skinos" which is how the mastic tree is called by the locals, grows all over the Mediterranean but the variety that grows in Chios is the only one that produces natural resin! The mastic tree more specifically grows in the south of the island. The villages where it can be found are called “Mastihohoria” (meaning mastiha villages).
The flavour of mastic is bitter at first, but after a while it releases a refreshing and very aromatic flavour similar to pine and cedar -personally I LOVE it. Originally mastic is sun-dried into pieces of brittle, translucent resins. It is used as gum, as and added flavour in pastry making and also in the production of the famous mastic liquor.
Hippocrates was the first who mentioned the "mastic tears" and he used mastic for colds and for the prevention of digestive problems. And it's true that mastic is known for its health benefits. It may help relieve digestive issues, it may help clear H. pylori bacteria, may also treat ulcers and ease symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
Since I love how it tastes and it also relieves stomach problems, these two are my favourite mastiha products...
The Mastiha Sparkling Water is the best alternative for any unhealthy beverage. It is very aromatic and especially during summer a glass of cold mastiha water is what I need!
The Mastiha Therapy Powder is my best friend whenever I have a stomach ache, acid reflux or gastritis! My mum suggested to try this miraculous powder and I can't believe that it actually works! A teaspoon every morning with empty stomach is what you need to treat -or prevent- any abdominal discomfort. (That doesn't mean though that you should not call the doctor).
