As I have said before there is something about monasteries and remote churches that I love.. I love the calmness and the spirituality of such places. You can easily find your inner peace there even for a few minutes.
Especially churches built on the most peculiar, remote locations are incredible.. Besides the Agia Theodora Vasta Church (the one with the trees growing from its roof) that I have already talked about in a previous post, I also love the church of Panagia Kavouradena in Leros. A little church built by the sea!
Panagia Kavouradena located in Xirokambos, is one of the most beautiful churches in Leros island. Tradition has it that a fisherman was bitten by a crab while he was collecting sea shells among the rocks. This is when he saw an icon of Virgin Mary lying on the rocks. He prayed to her and the wound healed. He then decided to take the icon to the village church, and he told everyone about the miracle. That same night, he dreamed of a woman dressed in black who told him to put the icon back exactly where he found it.
It was then decided that a small church should be built exactly where the icon had been found. So literally the church is built on the rocks by the sea and every year the Miraculous Icon of the Virgin is celebrated on the 8th of September..
