One game does not make a season but with the position the New York Mets are in, they need to win almost every game before the trade deadline.
Last night's loss to the San Francisco Giants was heart-breaking. The Mets had a chance to go ahead in the 10th, yet failed to score. Some question Mickey Callaway's choices there, something that is not novel. Why he would let Nido bat with Ramos on the bench only to hit him for Lagares in the next spot makes no sense.
The Mets did go ahead in the 16th on Pete Alsonso's 32nd HR of the year. Unfortunately, the Giants came back with two runs in the bottom of the 16th to walk the game off.
While the Mets are still in the wild card hunt, there are a lot of teams ahead of them, including the Giants. Often it is not the number of games back but the teams required to climb over. It gets tough to make up ground with so many teams in the way.
Unfortunately, by this point in the season, a team is truly what its record shows. While turnarounds can happen, they are rare. If the Mets were to pull something off, they will need to put together a 7 or 8 game winning streak while winning something like 13 out or 15.
There are still three games left on the road trip. Winning with Syndergaard on the mound last night was crucial. Tonight the Mets are sitting well with deGrom taking the hill. Then it gets dicey. Tomorrow is a fill in for Zack Wheeler, Walter Lockett.
Sunday sees an inconsistent Steven Matz take the mound.
The team needs wins badly if they have any hope to get back into this thing. No matter what the game turns into, they need to win.
