A few of us @pennsif have been talking about selling some of our handcrafted items, or services, for STEEM or SBD...and so I have been monitoring the adventure from my perspective of 35 + years in retail.
My conclusion, is that there is no viable way to run a retail business with STEEM as a currency.
While it would be very cool to trade a few things here and there, for Steem, just to add more voting power...one cannot run a business when the value of both SBD and Steem are more of a market built for trading, such as stocks are.
If there is to be a platform for running businesses, there would need to be some form of nominal token or coin...so if I mark something at say 10 SBD, and someone wants to purchase it next week, they know it will cost 10 SBD (By the way, that is what I thought SBD was for until it bounced up in value last fall and shattered my illusion. )
As it is now, the value of Steem and SBD both change so much there is no way to mark a set price for goods, Or to then use the incoming funds to buy new materials in order to make more goods.
A few months ago, someone could have purchased an 800.00 USD pair of boots from me for 80 SBD or less...However, the materials cost me 400.00 USD, so if I had sold them for 80 SBD then, I would suddenly have 206.00 USD today while SBD is at 2.58 - vs the 10.00 it was a few months ago...
That is not even enough to replace the materials, nevermind get paid for the work...yet the customer paid full price based on the market value when they purchased. (hypothetical scenario)
See the problems yet?
If SBD only slightly shifted here and there, as Silver does (gold as well, but less so because it can be far more volatile at times. Gold is better for long term wealth holding), then it could function for nominal transactions. But alas it does not.
Maybe at some point someone @utopian-io will create a cryptocurrency that has a nominal value token or coin...but until then, I see Steemit as fun, maybe a good long term holding place, safer than BTC possibly...but more of a fun social platform.
So there you have it...my retailer's perspective.
