Good day dear Hive community, I hope you are all well and you had a pleasant start to the new week! In this post, I would like to introduce a mineral a little more closely and hope you can expand your knowledge a little.
You can see here a representative of the mineral class of oxides, which is also known as Ilmenite. Ilmenite is of magmatic origin and it was named for the first time in the 19th century by the mineralogist William Gregor (1761 - 1817) and at that time it was still known under the name Menakanit which refers to the place of discovery Menaccan in England near Cornwall and the current name can be traced back to the German mineralogist Adolph Theodor Kupffer (1799–1865) who named it after the Ilmen Mountains. It is one of the most important minerals when it comes to the extraction of titanium and the appearance of the crystals is black and the shine of the crystals is metallic and it is also used for the production of paints, paper or cosmetics and ilmenite has already been found in large quantities on the moon and is of interest for research purposes and the goal is to use the mineral for the production of oxygen and as an ore it is also of interest for the extraction of iron and can be used in many ways from an economic point of view. The most important places of discovery on earth include England, Switzerland, Africa, Afghanistan and it can be found in several thousands of different locations worldwide and it is often found together with iron or titanium-containing minerals.
