Hey dear Hive community, I hope you had a great day and also wish you a good start to the new weekend! In my new post I would like to introduce a colorful plant that I recently photographed, I hope you appreciate and like my contribution!
The name is common lilac and scientifically Syringa vulgaris and it originally comes from the Mediterranean region. Flowering period of this hardy plant begins in May and the wonderful purple to violet flowers appear, which are uninteresting for insects due to the rather bitter nectar. It is very suitable as an ornamental plant and prefers nutrient-rich and calcareous soils and is generally considered very easy to care for! Already in the 10th century the plant came to Spain and from the 16th century, it was cultivated more and more in Europe and was extremely popular due to the intense fragrance.
It can also be found in Greek mythology and it is evident from lores that the flute of the god of the shepherds Pan was made of lilac wood. In Greek mythology, there is a legend that Pan was in love with a nymph named Syrinx and Pan chased her through the forest, whereupon Syrinx turned into a lilac to hide from him. The ancient Celts also revered lilac very much and it was considered a magical plant there, which was associated with magical powers.
Even if some might not think so at first glance, lilac is also a medicinal plant. From a medical point of view, it are the ingredients syringin, essential oils, bitter substances and farnesol that make it medically valuable and this has been known since ancient times. It can be used well against pain, but also against fever or other diseases. In too high a dosage, some can react sensitively to Syringa vulgaris and as always, it is important to know that you should always ask your doctor about the correct application, dosage and possible side effects!
The genus Syringa includes about 20 different species in different colors, which have different meanings from a symbolic point of view to match the colors. Violet lilac is a typical symbol of spirituality as well as happiness and pink colored love and recognition. There are also lilacs with white flowers and these symbolize purity and innocence.
