Splinterlands has been one of my favorite games since mid-2021. Growing my card collection is what motivates me to play almost every day, in addition to the fun the game provides. Over the years, Splinterlands has gone through many changes, evolving from a game with only a handful of cards from the old Alpha and Beta editions into a massive universe filled with cards from multiple sets and new mechanics.
As the game evolved, the reward cards also changed. In the past, reward cards were fully tradable, meaning you could sell them on the market as soon as you earned them. However, due to inflation issues within the game's economy, that system was replaced by Reward Soulbound cards, which are permanently bound to your account unless you pay a DEC fee or use the appropriate scrolls to unlock them for trading.
One of the newest collections introduced to the game is Foundations. At first, these cards could be earned by playing the Campaign mode, but today they are only available through the Frontier mode. Every five victories rewards you with one Foundations pack, along with three entries for the weekly Black Foil or Gold Foil card raffle.
In addition, every day players can spin Lux's Favor, which offers several rewards such as Energy, Skins, Spark tokens, and other useful items. During one of these spins, I received a very unusual battle that reminded me of the old Campaign mode.
The battle consisted of facing a single monster that acted like a true boss. It had an enormous health pool, heavy armor, and dealt a tremendous amount of damage. Fortunately, it also had one major weakness: it was extremely slow.
As soon as I noticed that, I decided to build my strategy entirely around speed. The Fire Splinter was the perfect choice because it features several incredibly fast monsters, and its Archon grants an additional +1 Speed to the entire team.
For my main tank, I selected Scales of Justice, which has a base Speed of 5 along with the Dodge ability, greatly increasing its chance of avoiding incoming attacks. Combined with the Archon's speed bonus, it became incredibly difficult for the boss to land a hit.
Honestly, I'd love to see more battles like this in Splinterlands. It would be great to have similar encounters in the Modern format, offering better rewards, such as increased chances of obtaining rare cards or special items from reward chests.
When I built my lineup, I was almost entirely focused on speed. However, once the battle started, I realized that the boss also had abilities like Shield and Demoralize.
At that moment, it became clear that magic attackers would have been much more effective since they completely ignore the damage reduction provided by Shield. Fortunately, I had included at least one magic attacker, who also possessed the Inspire ability, partially offsetting the effects of Demoralize.
Even so, most of my team relied on Ranged attacks, which were heavily affected by Shield.
The strategy was simple: survive by dodging as many attacks as possible while dealing consistent damage every round. Thankfully, it worked exactly as planned. My tank avoided most of the boss's attacks for several rounds.
Eventually, The Big Leronski managed to land a hit, but by then the rest of my team was still completely intact.
Shortly afterward, the boss landed another powerful attack and finally defeated my tank. From that point on, it could target any member of my team. Fortunately, its health was already critically low, and I could already see victory within reach.
This is exactly the kind of battle that makes me enjoy Splinterlands even more. It was fun, unique, and required real strategy—the kind of gameplay I'd love to see more often.
The only disappointment was the reward. Considering how challenging the battle was, I expected to receive at least one Foundations card, but in the end I only earned a few Spark tokens.
