In a developing nation like Nigeria, crime and news of it are the leading head lines making the rounds in our daily news. It is no longer a point for much debating what the effect of crime are in developing nation.
Crime we know is an action or omission which constitutes an offence and is punishable by law. Obviously, crime is a major part of every community or society and it cost and effects touches everyone to a degree.
In Nigeria particularly, there are a lot of absurd and weird things happening most especially amongst the youths who are supposed to be future leaders. Crime happens at every facets of life but we will narrow it down to the young people.
I have so far learnt that idleness is the greatest enemy of a young man. A few day ago, i heard a story of how a young man forced his way through a young ladies all because he was at home and was engrossed with pornography and after that he forced a young girl and this is as a result of social isolation.
Sporting activity could be a major means of combating crime if a nation make much investment in the sporting sector.
It could be difficult i know for the government to fund sports into the grass root as much resources and time already has been pour immensely into the professional football leagues and the grass root sport left unattended to and it has so far created a crime base among the young people.
Crimes really originate from place where the people are not carried along by the government in the area of their interest. The increasing rate of cultism in Nigeria as a result of unemployment among the young.
When people are not actively engaged, they result into following their minds.
Reasons for Crime among Young people
- Peer group pressure
- Peer involvement in problem behaviour
- High proportion of unsupervised time with peers
- Low family income
- Lack of social commitment
- Community disorganisation
- Opportunity for crime
- Availability of drugs
- High percentage of children in the community. Nigeria like i know doesn't have a birth control system as such many young people are being produced on a very random bases which this same young people will be same people to constitute menace in the society in future.
All of this has it own way of propagating crime among the young people but if organizations and government can create an enabling environment in the world of sport for this young people, crime can be managed.
Sport academy, sport festivals and sport competition could be of immense help in fighting crime in the society as major forms of crime begins either by see for survival or through idleness.
