Conflict is prevalent in all human environments. It however varies in form and nature from place to place and from time to time. However, conflict management or resolution requires, not just a clear understanding of the genesis and character of each conflict or an empirical appraisal of the situational realities of the conflict, but also and perhaps more importantly, it's remote and immediate cause(s)(Anikpo, 1998).
All over the world, all over Nigeria and more specifically, all over the Niger Delta region crises of all imaginable magnitude are raging between and within communities. The question that is on the mind of everybody is - what is responsible for this numerous crises?.
Conflict may be defined as the struggle over values or claims to status and scarce resources in which the aims of the groups or individual involved are not only to obtain the desired values but to neutralize, or eliminate rivals(Coser, 1956). Schmid(2000), also in his own opinion conflict as a social situation in which at least with parties are involved and who strive for goals which are incompatible to begin with or strive for the same which can only be reached by one party.
Conflict is a dangerous development being espoused by a significant proportion of our youths in various communities, a fact that can no longer be ignored. In the light of the foregoing, a dispassionate understanding the root cause(s) of these conflict is very expedient.
