"Hi, friends! I’m thrilled to join this wonderful community and share bits of myself with everyone here. It’s an honor to connect with people who are equally passionate about growth and creativity. Thank you for the warm welcome!
My name is Jennifer Bassey, and I come from Okobo Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, specifically Nung Atai village. This beautiful region is located in southeastern Nigeria, within the larger Niger Delta area. Akwa Ibom is bordered by Cross River State to the east, Rivers and Abia States to the west, and the Atlantic Ocean to the south. Our region is rich in culture and natural beauty, known for its lush landscapes, rivers, and a coastline that brings vibrant life to the area.
I’m the second daughter of three girls. We are a small but close-knit family, and we live in Ijeshatedo, Surulere, Lagos. Surulere is a vibrant place full of life, culture, and a melting pot of different people, which has opened my mind to diverse ideas and experiences. My elder sister and I attended Akintan Junior and Senior Grammar School in Ojuelegba. Funny story—because I was so small and short in height as a child, my mom was afraid to send me to school alone, so my sister and I went together. Looking back, I realize how much love and care my family had for me and how they always put my safety first.
During my school years, I faced constant bullying due to my height. Being the shortest and smallest in the class made me the center of attention for all the wrong reasons. I’ll admit, it was tough to endure the teasing and isolation. High school, which is usually a place of growth and learning, sometimes felt overwhelming. But with time, I learned to see my height as something unique about myself. The scars from those years remain as reminders of what I survived. Yet, they also made me stronger, teaching me resilience, compassion, and the courage to stand up for myself. I believe this experience made me who I am today—strong, empathetic, and determined.
Growing up, I spent a lot of time with my mom, who worked as a seamstress. She had a shop where I would sit beside her, watching her sew and joining pieces of fabric together. These early memories were more than just time spent with my mom; they were seeds planted that later blossomed into a deep love for fashion. I remember how she would measure and cut fabric with precision, piecing together beautiful outfits from mere cloth. Those moments taught me the power of creativity and craftsmanship, and I knew I wanted to pursue fashion in some form.
During my junior school holiday, my parents enrolled me in a fashion school. This was my first formal exposure to design, and I immediately fell in love with it. Learning to create patterns, sketch designs, and see my ideas take form felt magical. From then on, fashion became an integral part of my identity. Fashion, for me, is more than just clothing; it’s a way to express individuality and to tell stories without words. I love how fashion allows one to communicate emotions, culture, and creativity all at once. The journey hasn’t always been easy, but every sketch, every stitch, and every completed design has reinforced my passion.
Today, I’m a budding fashion designer with a hunger to grow and make a mark in the industry. I’ve gone from drawing early sketches to experimenting with fabrics and patterns, continually honing my skills. Fashion is my outlet for expressing ideas and emotions, and it’s also my way of making an impact in people’s lives. I am excited to see where this journey takes me, and I look forward to meeting others who share this passion.
After completing fashion school, I felt a need to expand my skills beyond fashion. My mom always emphasized the importance of being computer-literate, which stuck with me. So, I decided to enroll in a tech school, where I studied product design. Product design turned out to be a perfect match for my love of art and drawing. The field has opened my eyes to new dimensions of creativity and problem-solving. Learning product design has taught me the importance of user-centered thinking, creativity, and empathy in creating solutions that meet people’s needs. I’m gaining skills that allow me to see challenges from new perspectives and find innovative solutions.
Blending my knowledge of fashion with product design has been an enlightening experience. I’m learning to view challenges from new angles, appreciating how design can make life easier or more beautiful. Fashion taught me about aesthetics, while product design is teaching me about functionality and user experience. Together, these fields allow me to create with both form and function in mind. This journey is stretching my creativity and broadening my vision for what I can bring to the world of design.
Every day, I strive to learn something new. I believe growth is a continuous journey, and I’m grateful to the people who’ve supported me along the way. Recently, I was introduced to the Hive platform by @beauty197, and I’m immensely grateful. Hive has been an incredible experience so far, from learning how the platform operates to the numerous opportunities it provides. The seminars and tutorials have helped me understand how to navigate the platform, how to earn while spending using HBD, and all the ways I can contribute. I feel blessed to have this opportunity and to be part of a forward-thinking community that values innovation, creativity, and collaboration.
Starting this journey with Hive feels like a new chapter. I am excited to learn, grow, and share my insights with all of you. I hope to make meaningful contributions and learn from the wealth of knowledge within this community. It’s rare to find a platform that encourages both personal growth and community building, and I look forward to making lasting connections here.
