My phone is ringing again. This must be the tenth call in the last fifteen minutes. I haven't even looked at the screen to see who is calling; my body is already on high alert. For the past few days, the sound of the phone ringing no longer signals that someone wants to talk to me. It merely heralds the next nuisance.
Sure enough, a red warning from the Truecaller app appears on the screen.
Spam and/or scam!
For days now, I’ve been bombarded by dozens of calls from unknown numbers. I’m starting to wonder when it will ever stop.
The unknown numbers calling me keep changing. I block one, and another strange new number pops up. These numbers even call in rapid succession; no sooner has my phone stopped ringing than another call comes through.
And with every single call, Truecaller issues a spam or scam warning.
What’s most annoying is that these calls come at all hours—while I’m working, during lunch, and even when I’m playing with my children in the afternoon.
Fortunately, there were no calls while I was asleep to disturb my rest.
It’s incredibly bothersome, making me suspicious of every unfamiliar number that calls. I want to ignore all incoming calls, especially when an unknown number appears on the screen, yet I’m afraid of missing an important call from someone who actually needs to speak with me.
The constant calls were starting to make me lose my cool. I felt suspicious every time a call came in—was this another scam call or spam call? However, I still checked the screen when a call came in. Even though I didn't expect much, I was still worried it was a real caller who wanted to talk to me.
Now, incoming calls no longer carried the hope that someone out there wanted to talk to me.
The biggest loss wasn't my time. It was the quiet trust I used to have every time my phone rang.
