I recently had an unforgettable visit to the zoological park at the University of Ibadan, and it turned out to be one of the most interesting experiences I’ve had in a long time. What made the visit even more special was not just seeing the animals, but also feeling the calm and quiet environment that surrounded the entire place. The fresh air, the open space, and the peaceful atmosphere made it feel like a small escape from the noise of daily life.
As I walked around the park, the first thing I noticed was the unique enclosures. Each animal had its own space, carefully fenced with wire mesh and sheltered with simple roofing. The structures looked old and worn, which gave the place a historic feel, like it had been part of the university for many years and had its own story to tell.
The first animal that caught my attention was a small brown monkey inside a wire-mesh cage. It stood on top of a black plastic container and moved quickly from one side of the enclosure to the other. Its long tail curved gently behind it as it balanced itself, and it kept turning its head as if it was carefully watching everyone around. The monkey looked playful, alert, and full of energy, and it made the space feel lively.
Not far from there was the enclosure of a large vulture. Unlike the restless monkey, the vulture stood very still near the front of its cage. Its dark wings were folded neatly at its sides, and its bare pink chest stood out clearly against the darker feathers. Above its head was a small white information paper attached to the wire. The vulture moved very little, only slowly turning its head from time to time, giving it a calm, serious, and watchful presence.
I spent some time watching the animals quietly from outside the fences. Some were resting peacefully, while others moved slowly around their enclosures. There was a sense of calmness in the way they behaved, and I found myself feeling relaxed just standing there and observing them. It felt different from watching animals on television because I was able to see them up close, hear the small sounds they made, and feel more connected to nature.
One of the most memorable moments of my visit was standing directly in front of the cages and just taking everything in. The smell of the earth, the warmth of the sun, and the gentle breeze combined to create a very peaceful moment. I even caught myself smiling without realizing it because I felt so comfortable and happy in that quiet space.
What I loved most about visiting this place was how it helped me slow down. Sometimes life can be very stressful and overwhelming, but being there made me forget my worries for a while. I felt present, grounded, and more aware of my surroundings. It reminded me of how important it is to take breaks from our busy lives and connect with nature, even if it is just for a short time.
By the time I was ready to leave, I felt refreshed both mentally and emotionally. The visit was not just a simple outing, but a meaningful experience that stayed in my mind even after I left.
