Contrary to so many beliefs, boxing day is not a day when we trade blows, get wounded and move on to the next bout. Boxing day origin can be traced to the United Kingdom, considered a day when presents from Christmas are officially unwrapped and people get to relax more with the loved ones.

Some take the name literally and engage in violent altercations with one another and feign ignorance and misconstrue the deeper meaning and intentions of the boxing day celebrations.
I once met a friend who believed that the boxing day celebrations actually entailed violence, I spent a great deal of time explaining what the boxing day tradition was all about.

The highest number of gifts between adults were actually given and opened on boxing day not even on the Christmas day celebration itself.
One of the reasons for that is because people are usually so busy on Christmas day, attending to guests, going out and having fun and so many other social activities that they forget to actually unwrap their gifts or even forget to issue gifts.

Being a traditionalist myself, I believe in researching traditions before misinterpretation occurs. I still wonder how some people believe that boxing day is the day when you settle disputes through the use of your fists. Well maybe it is because of how the name sounds, "boxing" day.

Previously, gifts were hardly (if not never) called presents, the were called boxes, because they were wrapped in tiny or large boxes and mostly presented after Christmas among adults. Of course, kids were given their gifts on Christmas day, more precisely, the gifts were set aside under the Christmas tree the night before Christmas.

But among adults, the gifts, like I said, were shared the day after Christmas in boxes, hence the name boxing day. The ring is for professional boxing, if you are fortunate enough to witness a professional boxing match up on boxing day, remember that it gives you no right to engage in uncoordinated violent altercations.

As we unwrap our gifts with our friends, families and loved ones, remember that the gifts and gifting should extend to those around us.
The law of gifting on boxing day does not specifically say we should only give to those we know, after-all it is somehow when we give only to those who already have in abundance while we let those who lack starve.

There are those who deserve the boxing all around us, we should consider them and give them the boxes and share the love of this yuletide season with the homeless and the needy.
The best time to do the secret Santa parties are even sometimes done on boxing day to give gifts to randomly selected people.

Gifts are given to celebrate those around us, both the ones we know and the ones we don't know. Let us take time out to put the boxes in boxing day.
Happy boxing day
