Hola amigos || Hello friends

My wife says I don’t want to let go of the ’90s, and I say, “Why should I?” I feel good this way, remembering how wonderful my childhood was, how wonderful things were when I was a kid, and I’m sure any of us would make that wish if we had the chance. How could we forget the sound of that fan, those giant TVs, the video rental stores, the record shops, the sound and even the fashion, ha ha ha… but okay, anyway. We’re talking about video games and, of course, another classic: Battle City.

I'm sure you remember those “100-in-1” cartridges which, of course, were pirated that promised tons of fun and that sometimes, if not always, repeated the same games under different names. But it was on one of those cartridges that I discovered this classic video game; after Mario Bros. and my schoolwork, Battle City was the game I spent the most time playing on the TV. For those who aren’t familiar with the game, you had to control a tank with the mission of defending your base, which contained an eagle a symbol you had to protect with your life from waves of enemy tanks trying to destroy it. To do so, you had to fight your way through by destroying walls or using the bushes to hide.

You could play as a team, and well, the only person I had at home all afternoon was my sister and that guaranteed fun, because if, due to some miscalculation on our part, my shot ended up hitting my sister’s tank and eliminating her, that’s when we could say the alliance was over. Because the danger didn’t just come from enemy tanks this was war, and any mistake could result in the death of our teammate, in this case, my sister, ha ha ha…

Despite the accidents and fights with my sister that always ended in laughter, Battle City became one of my favorite games from that era. It was a simple, fast-paced, incredibly fun video game with endless replay value thanks to its level editor. Today, I imagine this game in an open world with ultra-realistic graphics it must be absolutely incredible. Whenever I think back on these video games and that stage of my life, it brings back that feeling of missing the magic of two players sitting on the floor, sharing a pair of rectangular plastic controllers, and trying to make sure a stray shot didn’t destroy either the eagle or the family, ha ha ha.
