Our friend emiliorios@emiliorios invites us, within this beautiful holos-lotus@holos-lotus community, to talk about objects that represent us—what they mean to us. This prompted me to reflect on which object holds the most sentimental value for me and why; the choice wasn't difficult.

Although I do not lead a life of great material prosperity, I have never been someone who places much value on material things; over the years, this perspective has deepened, and I have learned that what truly matters is what an object represents to me. As a great book says, "the essential is invisible to the eye."

Background

About 36 years ago, my parents—who had been dating for some time—decided to have a child. My mother had long-standing internal health issues that made conceiving difficult, so she tried every possible avenue. She visited doctors, underwent treatments, and traveled to other provinces seeking help; in moments of desperation, she even turned to people with spiritual beliefs or religious practices in hopes of conceiving—though I should clarify she did nothing bizarre; she simply sought the chance to become a mother wherever she could. I can attest to the effort and dedication she poured into this pursuit; she never gave up.

Four years of trying went by, and with each passing day, their sadness grew due to the anxiety caused by repeated failures. Then, one day, a wonderful doctor spoke to my mother about the importance of a calm mind for conception. Given that medical tests showed she was healthy and my father already had a daughter from a previous marriage, the only missing ingredients were peace, love, and persistence.

A few more months passed until they finally succeeded in conceiving me. The pregnancy went well; my parents agreed that all their effort and dedication had been worth it, and my birth became a deeply significant date for them. After prior discussions, they agreed to have my initials put on a small gold chain; they engraved my date of birth on the back and placed it around my neck at birth. For them, it was a goal achieved and a worthy sacrifice, but for me…

Special Meaning

To me, that chain represents a promise of my parents' love—of how much they wanted to have me and how deeply they longed for me—and it constantly reminds me of how much I owe them. In the most difficult moments, I hold onto it seeking strength and guidance; it reminds me that my existence is the result of desire and unwavering perseverance.

Perhaps that is why I have rarely felt alone; I carry an amulet with me that is imbued with a power greater than I can imagine. I hope that, when the time comes, I can pass on a feeling just as powerful to my own children.
