Work-related stress: an enemy of our mental health

    EDITED IN PAINT

Hello, dear holos-lotus@holos-lotus community. As we are about to enter the final quarter of the year, I feel it is timely to bring up the topic of work-related stress. This is a subject that hits close to home for me personally, as I have been working non-stop and have felt overwhelmed at times.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves; let’s start with the basics... what is work-related stress?

In the article “What is work-related stress and how can it be measured?” by Juana Patlán Pérez—a full-time professor at the Faculty of Psychology at UNAM (Mexico)—it is stated that:

“Stress is defined as a non-specific bodily response to any demand placed upon it... Likewise, work-related stress can be defined as the harmful physical and emotional response that occurs when job demands do not match the worker's capabilities, resources, or needs.”

Far from being an incomprehensible scientific concept, this definition has become a daily reality for most workers. No one can deny that most jobs today drive up stress levels—especially in societies where economic crises make it difficult for wages to cover a worker's basic needs. Consequently, only a select few "lucky" individuals are spared its effects. I use quotation marks around that last word to highlight that those suffering the most from work-related stress are often the very people who, having secured a comfortable position, fiercely guard and defend their jobs, striving not to lose what they worked so hard to achieve.

But is there no physical impact in this process? Does work-related stress not affect the body?

The answer is YES; various studies have confirmed that, physically, it can cause chronic fatigue, migraines, impaired memory and learning, immune system suppression, and frequent mood swings. However, the impact is not limited to the physical realm; it has been shown that the psychological damage caused can, in some cases, be irreversible.

    Work-Related Stress and Mental Health

Psychologically, prolonged exposure to work-related stress triggers a drastic increase in anxiety, irritability, and sadness. Individuals may begin to experience a sense of hopelessness or helplessness, where the mind magnifies failures—potentially leading to severe depression.

In short, our mental health can be just as affected as our physical health, and we must be aware of when and to what extent an aggressive work environment—or one that simply doesn't suit us—impacts us. To prevent work-related stress from harming our bodies and minds, we should adopt the following best practices.

A list of best practices to prevent or reduce work-related stress:

    • Prioritize tasks: identify what is urgent versus important, and avoid trying to do everything at once.

    • Set time boundaries: establish a start and end time, and avoid checking emails or messages outside of working hours.

    • Plan the day: organize activities using a realistic to-do list.

    • Take short breaks: pause for 5 to 10 minutes to stretch, breathe, or walk around.

    • Delegate responsibilities: rely on others when the workload becomes excessive.

    • Prioritize sleep: get enough rest to restore energy and mental clarity.

    • Exercise regularly: walking, running, or any physical activity helps release tension.

    • Maintain a balanced diet: avoid excessive caffeine, sugar, and heavy meals during the workday.

    • Foster a positive work environment: maintain respectful relationships and avoid toxic dynamics.

    • Seek flexibility: negotiate working hours or work arrangements if possible.

These are not the only steps we can take; I would love to hear your thoughts on other ways to reduce this type of stress. And always remember: avoiding work-related stress helps us look after our mental health.
