A topic that I never really researched. Simply because I was never looking into donating sperm. Recently, I read a very interesting story: A Tinder-like app but for sperm seekers and donors. Interesting! To say the least. At the same time, this provides a hook for additional use case development:
Now, before you giggle like a teenager in a ninth-grade biology class, take a step back.
What is actually happening here is fascinating.
Modern family-building is being completely reimagined. For solo mothers-to-be, same-sex couples and heterosexual couples dealing with male-factor infertility, finding a sperm donor is no longer necessarily a secretive or purely clinical affair. It is becoming a digital, international and increasingly personal process.
When I dove down this rabbit hole, I discovered a world that is simultaneously incredibly useful, slightly weird, and full of ethical questions.
To understand where we are today, look at Denmark.
Cryos International [website], which started in Aarhus in 1981, describes itself as the world’s largest sperm and egg bank. It now operates from Denmark, Cyprus and the United States and distributes donor material to more than 100 countries. Its donor catalogue contains detailed profiles, medical histories, photographs and other information, with different options concerning donor identification.
That is quite an operation.
Human reproductive material has effectively become a global logistics business.
A donor provides sperm. It is screened, processed, frozen at around -196°C, stored and transported. A clinic somewhere else in the world eventually uses it in fertility treatment.
A tiny frozen straw can therefore travel much further than its biological owner ever imagined.
And the demand is high! In my country, many wait for years before they are offered a suitable donor. This is likely the case in many other countries. The number of donors stays limited, while the demand is increasing.
The reasons are obvious: male infertility, single women wanting children, same-sex female couples and people trying to avoid passing certain genetic conditions to their children. ESHRE - European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology - [website] notes that sperm donation is now a well-established part of reproductive medicine, although the rules vary considerably between countries.
But despite all this sophisticated infrastructure, donor shortages remain a problem.
Which raises an interesting question:
What if we could make finding a donor more personal, more efficient — and perhaps even increase the number of people willing to donate?
In May 2025, a Danish company called Y factor [website] launched a platform connecting private sperm donors with people looking to build a family.
And the numbers are already interesting.
Y factor says it has attracted more than 10,000 downloads, users in more than 50 countries and over 3,800 donation matches, with roughly a 50/50 split between donors and intended parents.
The concept is essentially:
What if finding a sperm donor worked a little more like dating?
You create a profile. You look at profiles. You match. You chat. You establish expectations. And, importantly, you can get to know the person behind the biological material.
That last part is significant.
Y factor explicitly positions itself around known or private donation, allowing people to establish a more personal relationship and discuss what they expect before proceeding.
This leads me to a slightly crazy idea.

Dating apps have taught us something important. Sometimes, you can only learn so much from a profile. You can have 20 photographs, 500 words of biography and an algorithm telling you that someone is a 94% match.
Then you meet them. Within thirty seconds, you know whether the algorithm was smoking something. So why should donor matching be entirely digital?
Yes.
Actual speed-dating. In a pub. Or a café. Or a deliberately designed social space.
Imagine 30 prospective donors and 30 intended parents entering a friendly, professionally organised venue. Everyone has already gone through whatever medical, legal and identity checks are required.
No awkward clinic atmosphere.
No sterile waiting room.
No pretending that choosing a genetic contributor is just another medical transaction.
Instead:
Five minutes.
Talk.
Then a bell rings.
Next person.
It sounds ridiculous.
Which is precisely why I think it might work.
And what about including this as part of the Tinder-like app?
You can learn an enormous amount from medical records.
You can learn height, eye colour, family history, genetic screening results and education.
But you can’t easily put warmth into a spreadsheet.
You can’t measure someone’s sense of humour. Their emotional intelligence. Their ability to communicate. Whether they seem responsible. Whether they appear genuinely motivated by helping someone create a family. And, perhaps most importantly, whether the people involved simply like each other.
Nobody is saying that liking somebody should override genetic or medical suitability. It shouldn’t. But family creation is profoundly human. Why shouldn’t the process acknowledge that?
There is another potential benefit.
It might create more donors
A man who would never walk into a sperm bank and sit alone in a clinical room might be much more comfortable attending a social event where the purpose is openly explained.
Instead of: “Come to this clinic and provide a sample.”
It becomes: “Come and meet people who are looking for someone willing to help them create a family.”
That changes the psychology completely.
And the app doesn’t disappear. It becomes the infrastructure behind the event. The app finds the matches. The pub provides the human interaction. The clinic provides the medical safeguards.
Suddenly we have a three-layer system.
And here we have to get serious.
It is what happens when one donor becomes everybody’s donor.
The story of Dutch donor Jonathan Jacob Meijer brought this problem into the public consciousness. I didn't watch this Netflix documentary, but it was much debated when it came out.
A Dutch court prohibited him from making further donations after evidence emerged that at least 550 children had already been conceived using his sperm. The case also highlighted the much larger international problem: sperm crosses borders, while donor limits are generally national.
ESHRE has subsequently argued that Europe needs to think about international limits because there is currently no generally agreed global limit, while donor material can be exported across borders.
And the potential consequences are uncomfortable. A large donor network can create enormous numbers of genetic half-siblings.
There are obvious questions around accidental relationships between genetically related people. There are psychological questions. And there is a medical issue that is perhaps even more important.
What happens if something is discovered about the donor years later?
A genetic condition that wasn’t known at the time of donation could potentially affect many offspring. ESHRE specifically identifies both genetic disease transmission and very large donor-sibling networks as reasons to consider limits. So yes: unlimited one-to-many is a terrible idea.
But here’s where I think we can turn the problem upside down.
Instead of using technology to concentrate demand on the most popular donors, use technology to spread demand across more donors.
This is where the app becomes really interesting.
Imagine you select a donor.
The system says:
“Excellent match. But this donor already has 38 registered families.”
Then it shows you five alternatives.
Perhaps they have similar physical characteristics.
Similar genetic compatibility.
Similar personality profiles.
Similar interests.
But only three families have selected them.
Why not encourage you to consider one of those?
The algorithm doesn’t need to optimise for most popular.
It could optimise for healthy distribution.
More donors.
More families.
Fewer genetic bottlenecks.
And potentially more people willing to donate.
That seems like a much more interesting use of technology than simply building Tinder for sperm, don't you think?
There is another uncomfortable philosophical question here.
Suppose somebody genuinely wants to have lots of biological children.
Why is ten children through ten relationships fundamentally different from ten children through sperm donation?
Elon Musk provides an obvious example of the first scenario.
Nobody is suggesting that having many children is inherently a biological danger.
The difference is consent and transparency.
In a conventional relationship, the people involved know who they are having a child with. In donor conception, intended parents should know what they are participating in — including, ideally, how many other families have already used the donor. That is the critical distinction.
Maybe the problem isn’t one donor, many children.
Maybe the problem is: One donor, many children, with nobody knowing the full picture.
I think, this one doesn't need extensive elaboration. The HIVE chain may be used for various types of data. Like the effective donations and children born from inseminations using donor sperm. Obviously encrypted. Accounts can be anonymous from outside the service. Perhaps even anonymous from within the service and only reveal information to the donor and the child, when both parties consent, including the account log itself.
I am not sure if Y Factor will be easily convinced to start using the HIVE chain. Perhaps a new HIVE native App needs to be build. Add the uniqueness a blockchain can bring to add the edge to a competing service. A service that may turn spotlights towards our blockchain. For sure an app that doesn't have much competition, and for many is controversial which drives news value.
