No, not sex...hip hop.
Being a white boy growing up in middle class suburbia, who would know more right? At least that was the case through the 90's for most kids. For me through, if someone mentioned rap, Id think...
But hey, it ain't my fault; I was busy with DMB RHCP STP and Soundgarden (sad face).
After reading an article yesterday about the underground rap scene these days, good God, we've come a long way from Full Clip and Freaky Tales.
It wasn't until 99' fresh out of Ft. Sill playin with 105's, I headed south. Way south, to the south side of Houston, the 713. Home to Scarface, UGK and Mike Jones. Talk about a culture shock. Good thing I'm part Calabrese, or it would have taken more than some sun to "fit in".
It was a moment Ill never forget, sitting on the couch, watching smoke pour off a vega smelling of nyquil, and I heard it. That piano intro to Changes, that was it, I was hooked. I couldn't get enough, my ears bled.
In any case, fast forward 20 years, hip hop these days sucks. These poor kids.
I sure hope something changes, Ill keep my ears open. Until then, there's always the memories...
