Firstly I should understand that marriage is a long time commitment and not something to be lightly toyed with—it's a damn serious business and should be treated as such. Secondly I have to consider that I'm going to be spending my entire life with this one person, that should keep my antenna very much alive.
Dating should be a process for me to learn what I want in a life partner and yes, I should keep a running list of the things I can and cannot accept. But I must be careful when setting standards because there's no perfect one, so that we don't end up asking for too much and getting rubbish in return.
Physical attraction is the first standard, he might not be the-tall-dark-and-handsome kind of guy but I must be physically attracted to him, there must be great chemistry and my heart has to be able to skip a beat here and there. I must be proud to stand beside him, even so many years down the line. But looks should come alongside inner beauty, not replace them because physical beauty could evolve or fade with time, but inner beauty endures.
Love and Love and Love. I mean lots of it, because It is the life force through which every other thing glows. Then again one must have a very healthy perspective of what genuine love entails — not the fleeting and shallow kind but the type that is nurturing, steadfast and selfless. This grows deeper over time.
We all crave genuine relationships, which is why it has to be right from the very first step.
I love real people! Someone who is honest enough to accept his mistakes without letting his ego get in the way.
In the first place I'm never drawn to people who are into crossing personal borders and who need to always have it their own way, they definitely are a no-no for me. That is where mutual respect comes in and it's a non-negotiable for me.
Some people are so antagonistic that you soon lose your peace around them. I want a home that is like peace, and not a battleground.
Communication is key because I would love to have a partner who I can talk to, about anything and everything.
I could go on and on but suffice it to say that there's no universally right or wrong person—only the one who's right for you.
And most importantly, I must hold myself to the same standards I expect from others.
