Oostende Belgium
We were also at the North Sea during our vacation in Belgium. Until now, I only knew it from Sylt. I'd never been further west to the beach before. The opportunity was there, so we took it.
Our motorhome was parked between Oostende and Blankenberge.
On the first day, we walked along the beach to Oostende.
The town is located on the eastern part of a lost island called Testerep. That's why it's called Ostend.
There was an Eighty Years' War, known as the Dutch War of Independence against the Spanish, at this very spot.
80 years is a long time. In Germany, we had a 30-year war. That's not even half as long.
During the Second World War, the German Wehrmacht conquered the city on May 28, 1940.
In 1944, during the invasion of Normandy, Ostend was bombed and almost completely destroyed.
This is probably the reason why the houses and buildings are in the style of the 60s and 70s. It's not really nice to look at.
The way I see it, Ostend is currently mainly taken over by tourism.
Of course we walked along the beach first.
The first difference between the beaches I know from the Caribbean is quite clear. There are no palm trees, but lots of dunes.
In fact, I've never seen a non-smoking beach before. I'm not sure if this is really enforced in high season. It would be desirable.
Behind the first dune there is a pedestrian path that runs parallel to the beach for kilometers.
When we arrived in Ostend, we first went to the pedestrian zone. As it was the beginning of the low season, luckily it wasn't that busy.
The Ostend beach promenade starts at the train station and then stretches a long way towards France. We didn't walk that far. It's probably about 20 km until the border begins.
There was a festival on the beach this weekend.
The headlines showed the Villages People, Nena and co. So well worth seeing if you're over 40. But we didn't have the time. And to be honest, we didn't feel like it either. Loud music is not really relaxing on vacation.
These works of art were exhibited on the promenade. Art is a matter of taste.
But art also makes people talk about it. I'm sure many people talked about it.
I didn't read up on the meaning of it. But I have formed my own opinion.
The things look like huge plastic waste packaging. As they were right next to the beach, for me it's a reminder not to leave so much garbage there.
But others might just see red balloons in it.
I liked this one. Obviously the war bombed most of this house. The part that remained standing was integrated into the new building. In the villages a few kilometers away, which didn't suffer any damage during the war, there are only beautiful old houses like this. I wonder what they were thinking in the 70s and 80s when they built these masses of slabs out of the ground.
Well, a cold beer on the beach was of course a must.
What do you eat by the sea?
Of course, scampi and mussels.
So our first evening at the North Sea slowly came to an end.
Thanks for reading.
Was isst man wohl am Meer?
