I have been very interested in the outcome of the 'free flag' live experiment that is being conducted on my favorite blockchain, STEEM. Indeed I have heard a few more people complaining about flags, but I had yet to feel their sting myself. But now that I have....

Chapter 1 - Untouchable

I use bid-bots occasionally, and occasionally profitably. I have tested nearly everything on this platform in fact, but currently my go-to is tipu@tipu. I bid on my own posts and others. 'Politically', I think a healthy vote-buying market is fine.

Now, with free flags, I knew the risks. But I continued testing anyway, because that's what I do. In fact, this blockchain has paid me quite a lot in STEEM to do some of my tests. And, I figured, my content is valuable. I hope the flaggers come and, realizing how awesome my content is, they will have to decide against flagging or even upvote me. Join my awesome and valuable contest!

These are the sorts of things that happen inside my head ;p

Chapter 2 - Egoism Oversight

This is the awesome mindset that was upon me when I published this post, briefly announcing the testing period of a new token project that I am very excited about.

I hit it with a tipu-vote, figuring this would be a fine way to get the ball rolling, get some visibility, as well as get some liquid steem into the prize pool account.

It did not occur to me at the time, but this was #oldsteem thinking. Now, we can argue about whether old and new steem's actually exist, but if there is a definition of the #oldsteem mindset, I would say that this perfectly encapsulates it. I could have just sent the STEEM into the account. I could have put more effort into the post, I could have actually made a unique logo (coming soon :joy:)

Chapter 3 - Flags Incoming

The post is still live for you to flag or vote as you please - but what appears to have happened is that the post was identified as low quality (which upon further review, it is), downvoted by a cohort (ocdb@ocdb and threespeak@threespeak) and then manually reviewed and flagged again by theycallmedan@theycallmedan.

Now, the post still has some payout, but at the time of writing, I have earned >0 from the tipu vote, but it was extremely unprofitable.

Conclusion

Now we may discuss whether this is good or bad. But if we are just looking at the intended effects, I would say that I personally will think twice in the future before bidding on an 'any' quality post.

And downvoting guilds and manual reviews? Again, without talking about good or bad, I do believe that these were the intended effects of the change.

TL;DR - The #newsteem system seems to be working!
