based - that's actually how I started growing my tatos too. I dug down about 5 feet and put a hollowed-out 80 gallon plastic drum down there, drilled holes in it and put rocks int he bottom for drainage. I have I don't even know how many worms and other decomposers in there and it's a great way to make your own soil! You've got a good kid!
