In my last post, 3 weeks ago now, I introduced you to my humble Hügelkultur-inspired garden. Since that time, we've had several major thunderstorms that have deposited enormous quantities of rain with those events followed up by several consecutive days of temps above 35c/95f with 70-90% humidity indices...PERFECT conditions for the plants to thrive in I think.
So, let's talk a look at the garden, shall we?
Wow, the potatoes are just astounding me with how rapidly they have grown by efficiently matting down the ENTIRE bed with a tight network of roots about 1cm/.5inches down in the soil. Even with being battered by stormy gusting, the stalks rebound up when the sun and heat come on. I can see why potatoes are a staple crop for many cultures; they're hardy, easy to grow in sub-standard soil, and produce enormous quantities of food when ready.
Here's where these little spudlings were just 20 days ago for comparison, you can really see how much they've grown.
Next are the tomatoes - doing GREAT and smelling amazing.
You can see some of the fruiting tomatoes through the wires :)
Onions are going a little crazy honestly :P I have no idea what I'm doing with them. ANy onion growers out there want to opine on onions?
Next to the onions, I've been growing some bak choi, California Cowpea and basil in some dixie cups from seeds I had in the fridge. Not a bad success rate and I've just left them outside in these crazy storms! Eagle eyed observers will spot the guardians of the forest chilling in the shade.
To round out this post, I tried to make a gif of the .mp4 video we took of the insane lightning storm we had on July 4th here. Wow it was crazy and I wish gif's could do sound here on Hive to do the super-heated plasma concussions going off in the sky some modicum of justice. Alas, I can't seem to upload the gif properly. Any advice anons on uploading gif's here?
If you click the image, it should still load...
Peace out! Hive on!
