Vancouver rarely gets snow
Rarely. In fact, in the almost 5 years I've lived here I've only experience snow about 6 times in the city. And when we do get snow, it last hours, maybe a day if you're lucky. But soon after it falls its usually warms up and the falling snow turns to rain - washing away what little stuck to the ground.
But this year we've been really lucky! At least, us photographers have been really lucky. With an unseasonably cold winter so far we've had snow for not just days... but weeks now! And I've been loving it.
I grew up in a much colder place where average winter temperatures averaged -20c (-25F), snow fell and stayed and for months you saw only white around you. And as much as the cold can be rough, I love the white of winter. So this winter in Vancouver has been special for me.
Typically I stick to landscape photography. I find nature healing and calming and it provides a place for me to undwind. I can take photos and unwind. Its a win win. But I do like to capture urban shots. I call them urban environments because its not just streetphotography that I like to capture, but more the places that us humans have built and the places we walk through and live in.
Its fun to capture these more mundane places like bus stops and train stations that we generally ignore. And when the weather is ugly and everyone is hiding inside I find this is the best time to search out these shots - and when it snows it's even BETTER.
Anyways. I hope you've enjoyed these photographs I've snapped this last week. I haven't really taken the time to photograph the snow much this year, I've been having too much fun just living it!
