I remember when the trend of "Increased tips" started - during the Corona virus pandemic, with the transition to ordering food and working from home, people who went to restaurants gave bigger tips to waiters and restaurants to keep them alive (because they had a smaller volume of work) and to show them gratitude for being hit by the pandemic...
But it seems that the restaurant industry has forgotten that the pandemic is over and the restaurant owners saw in those extra profits an additional opportunity to make money. Why would the owner of the restaurant pay the wages of the waiters, let the guest do it.
I know that there are differences in cultures, and that's why I was surprised that they behave like that in my immediate vicinity. I can expect that this trend will soon spread across the border, to the restaurants in my country that I often go to.
I asked my brother yesterday, who runs a restaurant in Annan, Scotland, how he was doing.
he says that he did not define the amount and that it is up to the waiters to earn a tip by their approach to the guests. he tells me that many guests are surprised that tips are not mandatory, so sometimes they leave more than 10%, which is, let's say, usual and normal, when they are satisfied with the service and the food.
