I've known a couple of people that worked in mid-level federal jobs and when I would meet up with them they would always talk about how they work long hours but only have like maybe half an hour per day of actual work to do... and the work that they do they can't for the life of them figure out how it benefits anyone, even the government. One guy I know would say that he has been with the EPA for 3 years and has been promoted twice but he still has no idea what his job actually is.
I think we could eliminate 75% of all government workers in the US and almost nothing would change.
