Yes! You also can't shoehorn stuff in just to be crowd pleasing. I always liked Neil Gaiman's philosophy when it came to writing The Sandman series. The Endless are the coolest characters and you want them on the page at all times, but he treated them like celebrity actors, he pretended like he was paying them by the page as talent, and so he only used them when the story NEEDED them, not just for shits and giggles.
