In panel 5 I'm definitely going to instruct Lucas (our letterer) to letter in the most disgusting "SNAP" he can come up with. I'm pretty sure I was watching Luke Cage around the time I was writing this scene (that let's you know how long ago I was slaving over this issue!) and that brutal wrist-breaking scene was for sure lodged in my subconscious.
This moment is actually also based on a real spell from the Call of Cthulhu pen and paper role-playing game. If any of you have ever played "The Haunting" scenario that comes packaged with every rulebook, then you might remember that Corbitt has the spell "Harden" in which he may turn his skin into bark while you fight him. I thought this would be a great place to have a little omage to the game that inspired some of the foundation of this comic.
