More insight into the Dunwich family, and their connection to the Saxtons!
I don't know the extent to which this will ever trickle down into my comic, by I'm deeply interested in indigenous cultures in North and South America. It seems hard to find their mythologies and legends, no doubt cause there was a lot of intentional purging by colonizers at the time. One thing that always saddened me, was when I read that only 2-3 Mayan books still exist, because all the others had been burned. I just really want to learn more about the gods they worshipped and the stories they told, and I'm saddened when I think about how many we have lost.
So why do I bring this up? Cause this story takes place in North America, so if there were any Elder Gods kicking around, I imagine the Native Americans might have noticed! Obviously Elder Gods transcend continents, this planet, or in the case of Iss-Nagish, our universe itself - but I felt that the origins of the cult of Iss-Nagish in our reality would have originated in South America.
Not just because She is a giant spider, but because South America is where the Ayahuasca hallucinogen originates. Considered to be one of the most potent drugs known to man, capable of completely allowing a person to disassociate from themselves, or seemingly transcend time itself...
I felt that such a drug would be the only way a human could ever become even tangentially aware of Iss-Nagish's existence. So if Ayahuasca is what it takes, and Ayahuasca originated in the rain forests, thats where the first people would have ever come into contact with Rot - or with alternate realities...
Pictured in the last panel, is a young Rupert Saxton on an expedition down South, to plunder secret knowledge that should have been left well enough alone...
