Good day Steemians! The Persimmon trees on my balcony is another tree in addition to my Moringa tree that I’m growing. As mentioned in my previous post, the persimmon tree is drought resistant and can handle the warmth of the CA summers. And, it can handle the winters here as well.
The persimmon tree is currently doing well. I estimate the tree is about 3 feet in height now. Previously, the tree was just a stick with leaves coming out of the pot. But, know you can see in the image that branches are now developing.
I’ve had the trees growing from seed since about December. They've been transplanted and are doing amazingly well. In my previous post I did not include the early stages of the trees germinating from seed. But, that was because I had not dug through all my pictures. It’s pretty incredible to think that the trees I have growing on my balcony were seeds from fruits I ate in December. The picture below is similar to what both trees looked like when they emerged from the soil. The actual seed covering remained on the plant for about a month after germinating.
I plan for the trees to stay in pots and see how it develops and grows. Because it’s pot bound I’m not expecting the trees to get any taller than 6-7 feet (about 2m) in height. From what I’ve read the tree should begin to flower in about another 2 years and fruit bearing when its around 4 years. In a couple of months I plan to get some 15-20 gallon pots to transplant the trees into so the roots can further develop and thrive.
The image below is my second persimmon tree. In terms of development its about 2 months behind the other one. But, I expect it to do double in height in the next month.
A big thumbs down to nature… I was looking at the plants last week and I found a caterpillar munching on the leaves. That was NOT COOL and the caterpillar was ceremoniously cut to pieces with my tree clippers. But, thankfully there are new leaves branching out and I expect the tree to recover.
