The red earth trembles beneath ancient feet. Raffia spins like smoke, beaded cloth catches fire in the sun, and for two days the veil between the living and the ancestors grows thin. This is what these photos hold: a procession of guardians who wear no faces, only memory.

Where Ancestors Walk
They rise from dust in coats of flame,
Ibijuan, Adinimodo, each a sacred name.
No mouth to speak, no eyes to see,
Yet every soul who watches bends the knee.
Raffia towers, pink and pale and deep,
Round mountains where forgotten spirits sleep.
They spin in silence, headless, vast, and slow,
Ancient weight that dust alone can know.
Horns of shadow crowned in cowrie white,
A man bows low before the sacred sight.
Not fear, but reverence bends his spine this way,
For spirits do not vanish, only stay.
Ikilo Ote unfolds his wings of red,
Gold and crimson blazing overhead.
Children laugh beside these living myths,
Unafraid of what the elders gift.

Blue and orange, green and yellow thread,
Stripes of colour dance where drums have led.
Cowrie beads like rain along the spine,
Each mask a chapter, each a bloodline.
The city watches, phones raised to the sky,
Yet something older than the lens goes by.
Porto Novo breathes through cloth and bone,
A heritage no time will leave alone.

Some things cannot be photographed, only felt: the weight of raffia, the hush before a bow, the silence between two worlds meeting in the open sand. That is the Festival des Masques.
