@abadjaye🇧🇯 BENIN — WAAMA RITES OF INITIATION
In northwestern Benin, young men from the Waama community prepare to experience one of the most important rites of passage in their lives.
Held every four years in villages across the Atacora region, this ancestral ceremony marks their transition into adulthood through a traditional initiation that includes traditional circumcision, a period of seclusion, and the transmission of the community’s values.
For several weeks, the initiates are separated from their families and guided by elders as they prepare for their future responsibilities. Beyond the physical challenge, this rite is an important moment for passing down knowledge, social values, cultural identity, and community solidarity.
