1997 Canadian science fiction Habitat is set in the future world in which the Earth’s ozone layer has perished, forcing the surviving humans to stay from the sun as much as possible. Plot describes how brilliant but at times disturbed scientist (played by Tcheky Karyo) steals valuable biological material from government lab and escapes to small town, where he would experiment with creating new lifeforms. During one of those experiments something goes wrong and he transforms into new lifeform, while his wife (played by Alice Krige) sees their home transform into exotic heavenly garden. In the meantime, his teenage son (played by Balthazar Getty) gets into all kinds of trouble while adapting to new school. While few people can deny filmmakers’ good intentions, their way of conveying environmentalist message is impeded by low budget and unfortunate decision to combine science fiction horror and teen drama. The acting is uneven, while Canadian actress Laura Harris leaves memorable impression mostly by appearing nude in one of her first major roles.
