For this horror month, I want to bring you a recommendation that blends science fiction with psychological horror and a pretty unsettling idea that will stick with you.
Cube, from 1997, introduces six people who wake up with no memory of how they ended up in a strange place, a structure made up of hundreds of identical cube-shaped rooms, some rigged with deadly traps and others completely empty. No one knows who put them there or why, and as they try to find a way out, they realize the only path forward is figuring out the mathematical logic behind the maze. Cube is the debut feature from Vincenzo Natali, who wrote it alongside André Bijelic and Graeme Manson after years of toying with the idea of setting an entire story inside a single enclosed space.
The budget was tiny by sci-fi standards: somewhere between 350,000 and 600,000 Canadian dollars, depending on the source, and the whole thing was shot in just twenty days through the Canadian Film Centre's Feature Film Project. To pull it off, Natali built a single cube-shaped set and reused it over and over, changing the look of each room with colored gel filters placed over the camera lens. The visual payoff gave the impression of a much bigger, more varied labyrinth than what was actually built.
Cinematography came courtesy of Derek Rogers, and the score was written by Mark Korven, who would go on to work on The Witch years later. The cast is led by Nicole de Boer, Nicky Guadagni, David Hewlett, Maurice Dean Wint, Wayne Robson, Julian Richings, and Andrew Miller, most of them relatively unknown actors at the time, partly cast with the budget in mind. The film ended up winning Best Canadian First Feature at the Toronto International Film Festival, picked up five Genie Award nominations, and performed remarkably well commercially in Japan and France, where it broke box office records for a Canadian production.
If you're into films that make you think, or that push you to question the reality you're watching unfold on screen, Cube is well worth checking out.
