In late 1990s major Hollywood films came in pairs, so 1998 disaster film Deep Impact was followed by Armageddon. Both films share the same basic premise – huge asteroid threatens to destroy all life on Earth. Script for the Jerry Bruckheimmer’s film, which appeared later, uses group of deep-core drillers as protagonists; the plot shows how NASA sends them to desperate space mission during which they must set the nuclear bomb on the asteroid before the impact. Directed by Michael Bay, it features his trademark style of explosions, mayhem and MTV-style editing. Script isn’t much better, because it mixes action, pathos and melodrama with weak Titanic-style subplot, while completely ignoring basic laws of science. Film is ultimately rescued by few inspired acting performances in supporting roles, namely Peter Stormare as Russian astronaut and Steve Buscemi as one of the drillers.
