Whenever I think of unity I think of an army. Is unity in writing an army of words? Focus in your writing, mmm what could this be?
"Unity is the anchor of good writing. It keeps the reader from straggling off in all directions and it satisfies your readers' subconscious need for order." - William Zinsser ("On Writing Well," pg. 50)
This is probably the best way to have a clear and logical written paper. Once unity and focus is applied to a paper your message to the reader becomes clear.
What is unity? It is where all your writing is directed or revolves around the main point of the writing.
What is focus? When you are given an essay with a set limit of words and topic, focus is where this is covered completely.
When creating unity and focus using The Triangle of Importance is the key to doing this successfully.
Before you just start writing get your topic and create your thesis. Once you have set your tone and mood, as well as audience, then you can move on to all the small technical things to bring your paper together.
Create that "big picture" in your head of what you want to write. See the end result from the beginning. How to do this is understanding your topic, developing a thesis, and then organising your paper.
What do you want your paper to feel like? Keep this in mind when you select your mood, tone and voice. Remember to also consider your audience in this when you write your paper and choose your mood, tone and voice.
Read through your paper carefully and look for small things you can change to better focus and unify your paper. These small details can be like an icing on the cake, just to top it all off.
