We are all different in everything we see, think and say. Even our views and opinions are different. Writing is a great way to express these differences and to express our personality.
Your voice is a great way to create entertainment in your writing, this also keeps the reader hungry for more and then they enjoy it more. Remember that your writing also shows individuality, so leaving a mark of your own character on the paper is important.
How do we determine voice? The way we organise out writing and our word choice is a major factor in determining voice. Organising your writing properly can show the reader what you value most.
Expressing your ideas is great, but you must always make sure that your readers understand what you are describing or saying. Your choice in words also leaves different images in the readers mind. For example "run" "charge" both these words mean the same thing but the impression and image is different.
There is a difference between tone and voice!
Voice is attitude, are you being humorous or serious? Tone is the feeling you feel while reading about the topic.
When writing always keep in mind who you are writing for and what you writing for. Your audience and purpose with influence your tone and voice used in your writing.
Here is a great example to expound the difference you could use in your writing:
"Today's Special" by David Sedaris
"It is his birthday, and Hugh and I are seated in a New York restaurant, awaiting the arrival of our fifteen-word entrées. He looks very nice, dressed in the suit and sweater that have always belonged to him. As for me, I own only my shoes, pants, shirt, and tie. My jacket belongs to the restaurant and was offered as a loan by the maître d', who apparently thought I would feel more comfortable dressed to lead a high-school marching band.
I'm worrying the thick gold braids decorating my sleeves when the waiter presents us with what he calls 'a little something to amuse the palette.' Roughly the size and color of a Band-Aid, the amusement floats on a shallow, muddy puddle of sauce and is topped with a sprig of greenery."
"Let's not lose any sleep" by James Horne
"Is lack of sleep turning children into unteachable zombies, irritable at home, and prone to obesity? Let's take a calm look at the facts, says Jim Horne."
"A GREAT deal of anxiety is being expressed over children not getting enough sleep, usually because of lax bedtimes, watching too much TV and playing video games. Teachers and parents worry sleep-deprived children will be too tired to perform at school and irritable at home. Scientists worry kids are becoming fat: according to research, sleep-deprived children are twice as likely to be obese."
Just on a little side note for self improvement. I will be doing 1 push-up for every 1$ earned on my posts and will give a short feedback every day at the end of each post. As promised I will be doing 102 pushups, today, for yesterdays post. Any not done will carry onto the next day. 30 is carried over for day 1, 40 for day 2.
