Can you imagine the immense joy of someone who has been blind from birth and suddenly can see the light, the colors and everything that surrounds him, how magnificent it is for that person to be able to see, to discover every shape, to appreciate every texture just by seeing it without the need to touch it as he had imagined before. There are no words to describe so much happiness and gratitude.
But what if the situation is the other way around? If we were to lose, from one moment to the next, the wonderful sense of sight, what would become of our lives, or rather, what would become of my life?
Just imagining this makes me sad, but at the same time it makes me feel so grateful for having the blessing of being able to see. It is not easy to suddenly lose something so valuable and so essential, life would never be the same, I would feel that empty feeling, a very difficult position that I wish no one would ever be in.
Maybe, I don't have a hard time getting around inside my home, I am quite skilled at performing tasks in the dark, a little clumsier maybe. I should always walk with shoes because otherwise my little toe will suffer a lot at every stumble and it has suffered enough already. I'm sure I'll be defensive, trying not to become a burden to anyone, somewhat irritated and emotional, anxious not knowing what's going on around me, not knowing if what I hear is really what I think.
I would miss seeing every little thing in my life, even more those things that today I look at out of the corner of my eye or with indifference because I consider them simple or worthless because they are part of my daily life. I would spend my life missing, trying to remember how things looked and above all where they were. I would miss being able to see from the cup in which I drink my coffee in the morning, to the color of the blanket that protects me from the cold at night.
But definitely the hardest thing will be to be able to go on without seeing my son's beautiful smile when he wakes up and his little honey-colored eyes, to see him grow and change his features every day. Seeing my parents' faces. Seeing my partner's look, his gestures and the funny faces he makes to make us laugh. But precisely all this, will be the motivation and strength to move forward, to continue standing, to get out of the deep sadness and be born again, with a new reality but still alive and while there is life is open the opportunity to be happy.
The human body is amazing, we don't have the slightest idea of our capabilities until life puts us in an extreme situation. I have always admired those people who, in spite of their blindness, walk alone in the street, with their cane, sure of themselves and achieve many things in their lives. They learn to develop the rest of their senses and strive to lead a full life.
Studying a lot will be necessary, Braille is the first tool I think of, so I can learn to read again, maybe more technology is needed to facilitate this. I will learn to enjoy nature by simply breathing the pure air of the mountains, listening to the passing of the wind and the singing of the birds. I will enjoy good conversations without distractions like cell phones for example, I will learn to see my baby through my hands and even if I don't see her smile I will enjoy her laughter and giggles, her voice will be my joy. Although reaching that point of acceptance and gratitude will not be easy, surrounded by love and full of optimism, little by little I will be able to achieve it.
