Asking

One day a father sat on the porch and watched as his young son played in the yard. The boy had found a large rock and seemed determined to move it. The man watched as his son struggled with the rock - he pushed it and pulled at it with all his might. He took a stick and dug around the rock, then used the stick to try and pry it up. He found a piece of rope and carefully tied it around the rock, then pulled as hard as he could on the rope. The rock didn’t budge.

The boy, finally exhausted, came and sat next to his father on the porch.
“That darn rock. I can’t get it to move!” he said.
“Have you tried everything you know to move it?” asked his father.
“I sure have,” said the boy.
“No, said his father, “I don’t think you have.”
"What else could I do?” asked his son.
“You could ask me to help you,” said the man.

When I first heard this story, I thought it was just terrible! How could a loving parent watch his child struggle so hard and not offer his help? And in real life, I don’t imagine that the parent would wait to be asked. They would see the need and step in.

Of course the story is meant to remind us that we don’t always ask for the help that is available to us - from other people or from Spirit. We focus on the problem and struggle with it, using all that we know how to do on our own.

One day in meditation, I asked Spirit why I wasn’t getting help with my problems, even though I had asked! I had asked repeatedly!

An Angel showed me a tangle of yarn that I held in my hands. I opened my hands to offer it up to Spirit for help in untangling it, at the same time I closed my fists over the snarl and left only a few strands hanging through my fingers. The Angel patiently untangled the loose strands and then stood back.

“But it’s still all tangled up!” I said.
“You are still holding on to it,” was the reply.
“All right then.” And in my vision I opened up my hands again, but this time I just kept a little pinch of the tangled yarn in my fingers.

The Angel sighed and went to work, but all of the tangle of course led back to that little piece - such a tiny bit - that I held on to.

“I see now,” I said, “you mean I have to give it all to you! Then you can untangle it and give it back to me all neat in a ball!”
“Not exactly,” said the Angel.

And as I watched, the tangled yarn vanished from my open hands and in its place appeared a lovely cloak, woven in brilliant colors.
“Oh my, now I see,” I said.
“Yes, now I think you do,” said the Angel.
