When Drew McIntyre was having his first run in the WWE, everybody was saying that he had the talent to be someone big, but this never materialized. He had the size. He had the athleticism. Something just wasn't quite there. Being released from his WWE contract the first time ended up being a blessing for the guy. He went back to the independent circuit and eventually retweaked the way he went about doing business with TNA (Total Nonstop Action Wrestling).
It certainly paid off for him as McIntyre won the 2020 WWE Royal Rumble. He even scored an elimination of Brock Lesnar, as the author of "Suplex City" had a very impressive showing himself. McIntyre is highly decorated with an Intercontinental Championship (WWE), a Raw Tag Team Championship (WWE), an NXT Championship (NXT / WWE), a TNA World Heavyweight Championship, an Impact Grand Championship (TNA), an Evolve Tag Team Championship, and a WCPW Championship. He also possesses a Master's Degree in Criminology from Glasgow Caledonian University.
His performance from last year earned McIntyre a #36 spot on Pro Wrestling Illustrated's Top 500. Partnering with Dolph Ziggler earned him a Tag Team Championship. A last-man-standing match saw McIntyre put the screws to Dean Ambrose by beating the former Shield member in his last singles match right before the leader of the asylum jumped ship to AEW.
Before WWE released McIntyre from his first run with the company, the "Scottish Psycopath" was a member of 3MB with Jinder Mahal and Heath Slater. This relegated most of their matches to comic relief and kept these very talented grapplers stuck in the lower mid-card area. They were kind of a wrestling version of Spinal Tap, with a little slice of 'boy band" thrown in. At least Slater has kids (an inside joke)!
Now guaranteed a headlining spot in the next WrestleMania, McIntyre is poised to take on the role of a leader in the locker room. As reported by Dominic DeAngelo of Wrestle Zone, Matt Hardy (1/2 of the Hardy Boys or the Broken One) stated, "I think he's a guy that would make a great champion and he's a guy that the company can build around. I definitely think he's a cornerstone of any company he's in." McIntyre's win prevented him from being overshadowed by the surprising entrance of Edge into the Royal Rumble.
