A lone bird sitting on the roof of a house brought some fond memories back to me. In our last home, we had a bird feeder right outside our bedroom window. On the file cabinet near the window, we kept a book about birds. I would love spying on the feeder every now and then to catch some of the birds that were enjoying our double-sided treats. We would use the bird book to figure out the different kinds of birds that were on the feeder.
Just spending time in the yard was not enough to understand the variety of birds that were actually enjoying the outdoors in our neighborhood. There were nuthatches, woodpeckers, cardinals, robins, sparrows, blue jays, finches, mourning doves, swallows and wrens, just to name what I seem to recall. Of course there were different varieties of some of those birds. All of them didn't use the bird feeder, as some of them would go for the seeds that have fallen to the ground.
As I began to start recognizing some of the ones with distinct characteristics, I started giving them names. Sidney, bishop and seamus visited us quite often. Then, I realized that the designer of all of these beautiful creatures was God. Seamus was the woodpecker who not only wore the most beautiful colors but had this mane of red feathers that reminded me of the WWE wrestler of the same name. Sidney had this stripe on his head and always caught the food on the ground while the other birds were dropping the extra load that they weren't able to catch with their beaks. For some reason, I thought of Sid Vicious when I saw him in action. I guess he did things "his way!"
The blue jays seemed like they could be nasty, bullying other birds out of their way. Away from the window we had another feeder that attracted hummingbirds. They also were amazing to watch, especially how they remained airborne flapping their wings a mile per minute while staying in one spot. I believe that one little bird on the roof was sent as a reminder of the beauty that is all around us.
