The lovely Lori and I not only had to attend the PA Ren Faire's Celtic Fling and Highland Games again this past weekend, but we had to drag some relatives along with us to see what the fuss is all about. Taking place on the grounds of the Mount Hope Estate in Manheim, this event is a fun-filled two days and three nights of Irish music, vendors, food, contests and libations. On Saturday, the 16th Annual Celtic Fling Feis Irish Dance Competition was held in the Feasting Glen Area. Irish step-dancing can be traced all the way back to the 18th century in rural Ireland. The art was revived during the Riverdance craze of the 1990s. It is important to note that the Celtic Fling Feis is a member of the North American Feis Commission. Other contests were taking place in different stages on the grounds, such as the Kid's Freckle Competition, Kid's in Kilts Competition and the Men in Kilts Competition.
People can be seen roaming the grounds dressed in kilts, as Vikings, Pirates or characters that were beyond comprehension. Among the food items available from the many food vendors were Scotch Eggs, Turkey Legges, Curry-Wurst, Haggis and Boxty.
Celtic dancers and music was performed live throughout the weekend, and trust me when I say that even with the map of the grounds you could still get lost. Friday night was the kick-off concert with The Rogue Diplomats, the Pigeon Kings, the Town Pants and Gaelic Storm. Also performing during the weekend were Albannach, The Gothard Sisters, Hold Fast, House Of Hamill, JigJam, the Kilmaine Saints, Poor Man's Gambit, the Screaming Orphans, Searson, Seasons and Eileen Ivers. I love the way many of these Celtic bands were very similar to some of the original punk bands that are on my playlist. There was something here for everyone, and even with all the drinking, everyone seemed to be here for a good time. And that's what they received!!
