Porch pirates are busy this week stealing packages from various doorsteps that they spot that are left unattended. There are going to no doubt be some unsuspecting porch pirates picking up bait packages that might turn into glitter bombs or end up being filled with nothing but cat litter or dog feces. To deal with the problem people have gotten creative in recent years to try and deal with this issue.

Some residents have been able to catch the thieves in the act, filming them or chasing after them to try and get their license plate information etc. It is an issue that community members and Amazon as well have been trying to address over the years.

43% of online packages were stolen in 2020

According to one study for online shopping packages in Chicago, about 43% of those packages had been stolen in 2020.

One survey found that this year there have been over 210 million packages that have been stolen.

Some might have packages stolen from their home so frequently that they don't even bother shopping online any longer for goods. Why take the risk? Others have looked to set up more secure areas for delivery, whether they be lockers or package lock boxes etc.

This is a multi-billion dollar issues that doesn't have a significant solution yet to the problem. Thefts are surging nationally in the U.S. this year as many people prove they have no issue with easily taking something that doesn't belong to them off of someone's front steps.

One solution that has been increasingly deployed is individuals turning to bait boxes to try and catch those thieves in their neighborhoods.

You can find various videos online showing humorous situations where those boxes were filled with random objects, glitter, or trash, and maybe if a porch pirate ends up with that and being exposed online then that will be the last theft attempt by them. Or maybe not.
