Airbnb bookings have tanked over the last couple of months.
From people being concerned about traveling right now, to various government jurisdictions enacting new curfews and rules on business and movement etc, it has prompted a huge rise in cancellations for Airbnb as it has for the hotel industry in general this year.
New Cleaning Standards
Now, to try and prepare for a return to normal, Airbnb has recently issued new cleaning standards to help hosts keep property spaces safe during this time.
Those suggestions include at least 24 hours between rentals, along with other sanitization tips. But it still could be weeks, months, before business starts to go back up again.
Many short-term rental owners who have property spaces listed on Airbnb have been severely struggling financially over the last several weeks. They've suddenly seen a dramatic drop in income for their business, as many people are still busy cancelling their vacations because they are unsure if things will be open again by summer.
Overall, Airbnb is estimated to lose hundreds of millions of dollars, possibly as much as $1 billion because of travel plans coming to a standstill.
Starting To Improve?
Recent news relating to Airbnb bookings in China suggests that there might be a rebound on the horizon. For the first half of April the bookings in that region were up over 200 percent. Still, many large events are going to remain cancelled now for the summer and a variety of those curfews that different areas have put into place have also been extended for a few more weeks yet.
