It is estimated that there are some 3+ billion coffee cups being disposed each year thanks to the strong coffee demand around the world.
That's a lot of garbage.
It has also been suggested that it might take decades for those single use cups to fully decompose, now there are companies looking at what they can do to try and change that.
One of the potential solutions is edible coffee cups.
If they can penetrate the market and capture some of that space it means that potentially millions or even billions of coffee cups might be able to escape ending up in landfills.
We have seen other products also come to market to replace single-use items as well that have been edible or made with other environmentally-friendly materials.
The worldwide edible cup market is expected to continue expanding, it adds on to other edible items we have already seen come to market.
Edible shot glasses, edible straws, there's even an effort for edible cutlery. It seems like a creative solution to a problem that many want to solve, trying to produce less waste in the market today and to help protect the environment by doing just that.
