SECOND-HAND HEART

Deja vu
watching
her mouth move
but hearing only
deathly
silence

She finally
summons
the courage
to finally
say it

Then I walk
back
through
the wooded path

My boots
crunching
cracking
snapping
breaking
the sticks
as I go
alone

My second-hand
heart
has been here before
it has been
mended
poorly
with
needle and thread

Ready to unravel
with the slightest
puff of wind
I don't believe
I can
protect it
anymore
