We hear this often "nice guys finish last." I heard it a lot growing up. In fact, there are sources out there on teaching you how to be manipulative on social dynamics that teach the same thing. From my life observation however, I don't believe that's the case. But what's important here is to define the terms.
"Nice guys," are often referred to as passive aggressive doormats who don't stand up for themselves or others. They're weak and chicken and scared of anything that confronts them. This is not my definition of nice. My definition of nice is someone who knows how to stand up for themselves, stand up for others, but is kind and considerate and respectful to people. With that definition, I don't believe that nice = soft. I believe that nice = self-control.
As I get older in this older world, the things I appreciate about life change. When I was younger, I appreciated the fast cars, the big titles and the houses. As I age, I appreciate people who can love, be kind, be respectful and be compassionate. Maybe I've come to recognize that these are the things that bring true value to people's lives. These are the things that bring fulfillment and lasting happiness.
What do you think? Do you think nice = soft? I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below :)
