인공지능(AI, Artificial Intelligence)은 우리 삶과 산업 전반을 변화시키고 있는 거대한 흐름이다. 지난해 ‘알파고’가 이세돌 9단과의 대국에서 승리한 후, 사람들은 인공지능에 주목하기 시작했다. 일각에서는 발전된 인공지능 관련 제품과 서비스가 우리 삶을 송두리째 바꿀 것으로 전망한다. 하지만 인공지능에서 새로운 가치를 발견하는 것은 그리 간단하지 않다. 지난 17일 신라호텔에서 ‘인공지능이 바꿀 삶: 기회, 도전, 현실’을 주제로 대담이 열렸다. 이 세션은 제18회 세계지식포럼의 일환으로, 삼성전자 생활가전사업부 스마트가전 구성기 상무와 IT 산업을 선도하는 두 명의 전문가 패널이 인공지능에 대한 경험과 방향을 공유하는 자리였다. 딥 러닝, 인공지능의 발전을 가속화하다

인공지능이라는 단어의 첫 등장은 인지과학자 존 맥카시(John McCarthy)의 연구 제안에서였다. 인공지능이란 기계가 인간의 지능을 모방해 별도의 지시사항 없이 문제를 해결하는 연산 체계를 의미한다. 인공지능을 이야기할 땐 머신 러닝(Machine Learning, 기계학습), 딥 러닝(Deep Learning, 심층학습)이란 용어들이 자주 등장한다. 머신 러닝은 인공지능의 학습방법을 의미하며, 방대한 양의 자료를 컴퓨터에 입력하면 비슷한 내용끼리 분류해 판독할 수 있도록 학습시키는 연산 체계다. 딥 러닝은 머신 러닝의 진화된 형태로, 대량의 데이터와 컴퓨팅 기술을 활용해 인간 두뇌의 연결성을 모방한 심층 신경망을 구현한 것이다. 이는 컴퓨터의 지능을 한 차원 더 올려놓는 역할을 한다.

그렇다면 인공지능은 어떻게 산업을 바꾸고 있을까. 푸드테크 회사 위스크닷컴(Whisk.com)의 CEO 닉 홀제르는 딥 러닝 AI를 활용해 전 세계 이용자, 레시피, 상점의 물품에 대한 수백만 개의 데이터 포인트 지도를 만들고 데이터에 기반을 둬 추천 서비스를 제공한다. 작은 스타트업인 위스크닷컴은 초기 2~3년간 3명의 박사 학위자와 함께 전통적인 인공지능 기술을 사용해 식품 AI 플랫폼을 개발했다. 딥 러닝의 새로운 툴과 프레임워크를 활용했다면 몇 달 만에 AI 플랫폼 개발을 끝낼 수 있었겠지만 실제로는 2년 가까운 시간이 걸렸다. 2000년대까지만 해도 인공지능 연구자들은 주로 인간이 만들어 놓은 지식을 기계가 학습하도록 하는 기술을 구현했기 때문이다. 하지만 딥 러닝의 개발로 인공지능은 급속도로 발전하고 있다.

마지막은 빅데이터다. 아무리 빠른 프로세서와 알고리즘을 갖추고 있더라도 데이터가 없으면 소용이 없다. 요즘은 사물인터넷(IoT, lnternet of Things)이 급속도로 확산됨에 따라 매일 수십억 기가바이트의 데이터를 수집할 수 있게 되었는데, 이것이 머신 러닝의 원천이 된다. 때문에 데이터를 잘 활용하는 인재들이 인공지능을 설계하게 된다. 실제로 많은 기업들은 라이브러리와 소프트웨어를 활용하는 데 익숙한 인재를 고용하는 추세다.

“이제는 인공지능 기술을 다루기 위해 과학자가 될 필요는 없습니다. 업종을 이해하고 어느 정도 교육을 받은 사람이라면 누구나 ‘시민 데이터 과학자(Citizen Data Scientist)’가 될 수 있죠.” IBM 전자부문 브루스 앤더슨(Bruce Anderson) 사장의 말이다. 그는 “다양한 AI 계층들을 보면 ‘데이터’가 무엇보다 중요하다”며 “과학적인 차원에서 정보를 모두 활용할 수 있어야 하고 내가 가진 데이터, 또는 어딘가에 묶여 있는 데이터를 사용할 수 있느냐가 가장 큰 문제”라고 말했다.
