I don’t believe in Christian God. So, to me, Jesus is quite an interesting fellow human being. I see three likely possibilities as to how he came to be known as the “Messiah”, arguably the most influential human being Earth has ever seen: one, he is the biggest liar in human history; two, he was crazy; three, he had some purpose in mind.
The first possibility can be eliminated by simply analyzing the character of Jesus and his teachings. He seems to be a man of righteousness and completely free of ego, willing to put others before him and die for what he lied about? No, it doesn’t sound right. He even had a chance to confess before his execution. No sane man would be willing to die for his lies.
The second possibility, that he was crazy, is a bit more probable than the first possibility, but it still doesn’t sound quite right. Being crazy is one thing but to fool thousands and millions is not an easy feat. Even if he did falsely believe that he was the “messiah”, it doesn’t explain all the miracles he supposedly performed, as they were told by, not from Jesus himself, but from various accounts. One crazy man alone could not have possibly pulled off what Jesus did.
This leaves me with the third possibility, that he had some purpose. With some imagination, I have recreated what might have actually happened 2000 years ago.
Going back to year 0, this was a hard time to live, especially as a commoner. The poor back then were oppressed not only from the wealthy and the nobilities but also from the church. The commoners lacked the proper representations in both the political and social domains. So, to improve upon their situation, they had to come up with an idea; they had to strategize, to somehow make their life better for them and the generations to come.
What they needed was a leader, a leader that will have everyone’s best interest, regardless of one’s social status and identity. The people lacked financial or military support to forcibly institute a leader, however. But, what they had access to, perhaps the most powerful of all, was people’s faith and support. Money can incentivize a man to work, and fear can force a man to follow rules, but a man’s faith can make him willing to sacrifice his own life. More faithful followers a leader has, more strong and powerful is the leader. Faith is a scary thing, really.
So, they searched and found the perfect man for the job: Jesus. He had all the qualities they needed, most importantly, he genuinely cared and had the love for the people. Then, the people came together and fabricated all the miracles and stories to make him the “Messiah”, the savior who, once in power, will bring peace, justice, and equality to the world, the one who will finally stand up for the people.
As the stories of Jesus spread to other regions, more followers Jesus gained, and more power was taken away from their oppressors. The commoners of all worlds faced similar predicaments and, thus, regardless of if they really believed him to be the Messiah, they had all the wish for him to be so.
As Jesus stood before his trial, being asked to confess that he had lied or else be executed, he knew he would lose his life that day. But he thought, perhaps if thousands and millions may live a better life in turn for his one life, his death and his short life would have much more meaning than any mortal man could ever have, and thus he said with a firm conviction, “I am the TRUTH.”
So he sacrificed his life, so that he can give hope to the people who need it the most, so that there may one day come a time when no one ever has to be marginalized and suffer unjustifiably, and so that no one ever has to feel alone and feel unloved in this cruel world, because, through his death, everyone will now have at least someone who will love them unconditionally, Jesus Christ himself.
